that radiation treatment could possibly cause another type of cancer eh? I'm up for further surgery... as I've developed (???) a small bowel cancer, possibly as a result of treatment for ovarian cancer. Prognosis? Unknown.... until biposy results are known. Apparently, it's not necessarily a mestatsis of ovarian...

if it is a cancer just remember that sometimes battles need to be fought more than once to win and that you won against the cancer the 1st time, it gave up first  so you can do it again!!!

Jools I am so very sorry to hear your news.  You have had such a positive attitude in the past so just stay strong and know that we are all thinking of you and sending you positive vibes.

You have my email address and if there is anything I can do for you, please let me know.  I am still in limbo - another CT scan next Friday then if nothing shows again, an application for funding to send me to Melbourne will be put before the Health Board.  CA125 still rising.

Keep in touch and best wishes

Judy

Jools, so sorry to hear of your setback, and hopefully that is all it is, just a hiccup.  I have enjoyed your positiveness and comments over the last few months so all the best for your surgery and I am sure you will be on line and cheerful once again.

Hi everyone, and thanks for your best wishes. I saw both my oncological gynae at Auckland Hospital and my surgeon (Wayne Jones) on Wednesday, and am in a much better frame of mind to face my surgery on 28th March. My CA125 has crept up to 23 from the past two readings of 18, and that's a huge load of my mind, still being under 31, and highly likely to be associated with the whole radiation enteritis thing going on. The CTScan was clear on all other relevant body parts of any sign of cancer. Although the oncologist is suspicious that a cancer of the small bowel is far more likely to be a mestatisis than a primary new cancer, she was going to await the biospy results with interest. Wayne was very reassuring that the surgery he will perform should be successful in getting out "barney" (my nick~name for this new tumour) and all the offending scar tissue from the radiation treatment, without the need for a colostomy bag. He's wondering if it is just a huge build up of scar tissue rather than a tumour... or perhaps it's in the bowel/colon and not the small bowel (very close to where the two do join). Some of each bowel will be removed. He (as did my gastro~enterologist) is also of the opinion that if it is a tumour that it has been caused by radiation. But only the biopsy, post surgery will reveal all. In the meantime I need to take care with what I eat to avoid an emergency procedure with a small bowel obstruction ~ that which saw me check out the services of St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne with an emergency admission whilst on holiday at the end of January! Ya can't keep a good woman down for long! *guffaws*! (Some of my friends have been so unkind as to suggest that seeing only the good die young, I'm likely to beat this... hands down!!!!) AND.... anyone about to undergo radiation treatment, please don't be scared off. It's not usual/normal or even likely that this will happen to everyone. *sigh*. Chronic radiation enteritis affects only 5% of patients who have acute radiation enteritis. Seems I'm prone to anything that usually falls in the "small" percentiles! BUT... when they tell you to drink all those copious quantities of water to keep the bladder filled to protect the bowel..... they mean it! I did try..... but like my school reports often said.... "you should try harder"!!! Please, if you have any questions about your own treatment, check with your radiologist, by all means, but drop me a line if you need to chat, query or ask me of my personal experiences. Hugs, for the others in their own battle. jools@maxnet.co.nz

p.s. I do use "return" to create paragraph breaks, so I don't know why it's all one big boring looking huge paragraph. maybe it's the iBook that does it, as others post nice normal looking responses! LOL
